The Virginia Education Association strongly condemns Governor Glenn Youngkin’s latest attack on the rights of working people: his call for President Biden to forcibly end the strike by port workers along the East and Gulf coasts. The port workers, demanding fair working conditions and livable wages, are exercising their right to strike, and the VEA supports their fight for dignity and justice in the workplace.
“Governor Youngkin’s statement ignores the real issue at hand – the refusal of employers to recognize the essential work these port workers perform every day and their rightful demand for fair compensation,” said Carol Bauer, president of the Virginia Education Association. “Union-busting tactics like invoking the Taft-Hartley Act are a direct attack on the rights of all working people, and we will not stand for it. As educators, we know workers’ rights and fair treatment are cornerstones of a healthy, just society.”
The VEA is proud to stand in solidarity with these striking workers. We recognize that their fight is not just for themselves but for every working American who deserves respect and fairness. We urge a swift and just resolution recognizing their critical contributions to the economy and ensuring they receive a fair deal.
“The VEA will always stand with workers fighting for their rights,” said Bauer. “We hope to see this situation resolved quickly, with port workers receiving the recognition and fair treatment they have long deserved.”
Teacher shortages are a serious issue across the country. Here in Virginia, there are currently over 3,648 unfilled teaching positions. (FY23)
